Biography
Dr. Virginia Wise Berninger is a Professor Emerita at the University of Washington, where she served on the faculty from 1983 to 2016 in Educational Psychology and Learning Sciences and Human Development. With a Ph.D. in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University, her expertise spans developmental psycholinguistics, cognitive psychology, and neuropsychology. Dr. Berninger has been a Principal Investigator on multiple NIH grants focused on writing disabilities and learning disabilities, including brain imaging and genetics. She continues to publish and present on topics related to educational neuroscience and the brain.
Research Interest
Dr. Virginia Wise Berninger's research interests include the neuropsychology of learning disabilities, particularly writing and reading disabilities, as well as the genetics and brain mechanisms underlying dyslexia. She is focused on translating research findings into educational practices, with a strong emphasis on the development and intervention strategies for typical and atypical learning processes.
